Released: June 7, 2019

Fox’s X-Men series has been the subject of a lot of debate over the past two decades, with many believing that certain films in the franchise brought with them significant declines in standard. While 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past was considered something of a comeback, 2016’s  X-Men: Apocalypse was met with mixed reviews. And following Disney’s merger with Fox, it became clear that the series’ following installment, Dark Phoenix, would be its last.

That, alongside the fact that the film adapted one of the most famous X-Men storylines of all time, ultimately worked against the film – setting it an uphill battle that it was never going to be able to climb. Unfortunately, it barely mustered a walk up that mountain let alone a climb.

Though certainly not as bad as many like to make out, Dark Phoenix suffers from its unnecessarily dark tone which (Logan aside) was a significant departure for the franchise – something that makes it a slog to get through on occasion. Furthermore, its script suffered from a ton of expositional dialogue, some of the film’s conflict felt quite forced and it was ultimately too bittersweet to serve as a final chapter in this otherwise heroic franchise.

X-Men deserved better…
