6. Hellboy

Released: April 12, 2019

Hellboy‘s first trailer presented the movie as “big dumb fun” but unfortunately, that’s all it really was. There wasn’t anything of real substance here and it wasn’t exactly the reboot fans had spent over a decade waiting for – especially when many of them would have preferred to see the original franchise continue with the long-teased Hellboy 3.

Without the involvement of original Hellboy Ron Perlman and writer-director Guillermo del Toro, it couldn’t rely on the fanbase that their films spawned and thus, it needed good reviews. The standard of the film, however, ensured that this was never going to happen and, unfortunately, the film bombed at the box-office – in spite of its respectable budget of $50 million, drawing $44 million globally.

That being said, David Harbour is absolutely fantastic in the titular role – personifying the comic book character in a way many thought impossible after Perlman’s excellent turn and elevating most of the questionable material. Moreover, the visuals are impressive and the Hellboy make-up looks great. All that aside, the film is worth watching at least once just to see Big Mo from EastEnders wielding a machine gun. Like we said, big dumb fun.
