4. Shazam!

Released: April 5, 2019

Good old-fashioned superhero fun couldn’t sum up a movie more than it sums up Shazam! The live-action debut for the eponymous DC Comics hero, the film starred Zachary Levi in the titular role and was nothing short of a comic book gem as it made audiences smile with enjoyment.

Smart-mouthed teenager Billy Batson is forced to take a break from his search for his birth mother when he is bestowed with a gift he never wanted – that gift being none other than the super powers of a godly being known as Shazam. What follows is a tale full of humor, heroes and a heck of a lot of heart as Billy must recognize the most important things in his life in order to become the hero he never wanted to be.

The film’s witty script was the breath of fresh air that the DC Extended Universe really needed at the time, allowing the DCEU to continue the streak of success started by Wonder Woman and Aquaman while its uber-talented cast made us laugh, smile and even cry time and again – especially Jack Dylan Grazer’s show-stealing performance as Freddy Freeman.

This right here is what superhero movies are all about and, being the early release that it was, it set the standard incredibly high.
