Matt Reeves’ The Batman has officially begun filming
Matt Reeves has confirmed that The Batman has officially commenced principal photography.
After several months of casting it has been announced by the director himself, Matt Reeves, that principal photography of The Batman film has started in London, England. The filmmaker revealed the start of filming via social media.
Ever since Robert Pattinson was cast as the titular character, many had been guessing what this would actually mean for DC Films and the pre-existing DC Extended Universe since this was initially conceived by Ben Affleck, who played Bruce Wayne/Batman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad and Justice League. Before Reeves was even attached, Affleck was set to not only star but write, direct and produce a standalone film.
Affleck stepped down as director when the bigwigs at Warner Bros. Pictures did not approve of his script co-written by the former DCEU co-runner and writer/producer, Geoff Johns, even though Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker scribe Chris Terrio handed in a rewrite. By then, Warner Bros. and DC Films were already seeking other candidates to direct The Batman, and Affleck stepped down.
Since then, it has been a long road to developing the project in its current iteration. At the time, the Cloverfield director was busy promoting War for the Planet of the Apes while he was handling scripting duties of the new film.
Centering on a young, but established Caped Crusader fairly early on in his crime-fighting career The Batman stars Robert Pattinson, Zoë Kravitz, Andy Serkis, Colin Farrell, Paul Dano, Jeffrey Wright, John Turturro, Jayme Lawson and Peter Sarsgaard. Matt Reeves is directing from a screenplay he co-wrote with Mattson Tomlin. Reeves and Dylan Clark are producing for Pearl Street Films in association with 6th and Idaho Productions. Warner Bros. is set to distribute as The Batman will soar and glide into theaters June 25, 2021.
