11. The Gifted

A big problem with TV shows is that you have a finite amount of time to make things work. You could be stopped at any time. Especially with Fox, who is notoriously known for canceling shows prematurely. This means that sometimes you have to be perfect from start to finish. A must-have to keep people interested are the characters. The heroes have to be liked and the villains have to be hated or relatable. This is essentially what killed The Gifted. It featured a cast of characters that no one could relate to or cared about.

What’s sad is that the subject matter was good. It stayed true to what the X-Men stand for. They remained hated, feared, and chased by people due to their fear and ignorance. This is a topic that normally does well on program. Not so much for The Gifted.

They didn’t have well-known characters like Storm or Wolverine, but they did have some with a ton of potential. Especially the Purifiers as villains. Matthew Risman would have been a good character who could have had his own season as the antagonist. There were also characters like Sage and the Stepford Cuckoos who could have been breakout stars. Maybe we’ll see them again down the road.
