5. Margot Robbie is that good

Harley Quinn is front and center in Birds of Prey, with Quinn being the focal point of the story and also narrating events to the audience.

There may have been inspiration from Deadpool to have the character break the third wall and be a friendly presence to the audience. The move reflects something the comics have done as well: turning Harley Quinn into an anti-hero/villain.

It’s no surprise that the creators have done this with Harley since it’s difficult to make a movie with an unlikable, evil character. Harley may do villainous things sometimes, but she comes from a good place and is extremely likable. You want to root for her even when she’s breaking people’s legs with a baseball bat.

The way the character is written is part of Quinn’s success, but a lot of the credit goes to Margot Robbie’s performance. Casting Robbie as Harley Quinn is as perfect a casting as Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man / Tony Stark.

She clearly has a love for the character since she wanted to produce Birds of Prey and has clearly been given say on how Harley Quinn is portrayed.

Robbie is a true star in Hollywood with two Academy Award nominations, most recently a Best Supporting Actress nomination for Bombshell. She’s worked with top directors like Quentin Tarantino and Martin Scorsese, so it would be foolish to turn down Robbie if she is willing to do a sequel to Birds of Prey.
