9. Cyclops, Jean Grey, and Wolverine (The X-Men film franchise)

The X-Men movies are part of the early modern comic book movies that helped usher in the era we’re currently in. A lot of our love for the X-Men characters can be dated back to the ’90s animated series, which helped propel the franchise into the mainstream.

It would be just three years after the end of the animated series, in the year 2000, that X-Men ushered in an era that officially introduced non-comic book audiences to these compelling comic book characters – and it was with this movie we all accepted Hugh Jackman as our Wolverine. And while Jackman was the breakout star, X-Men wouldn’t have worked without its entire cast.

Chemistry had to be just right for this to work, and work it did. Perhaps none better than between Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, Famke Janssen’s Jean Grey, and James Marsden’s Cyclops. It’s hard to capture the energy of a comic book or cartoon in live-action, however, these three did that and then some.

The film presents us with a very believable engaged couple with Cyclops and Jean Grey. Equally as believable is Jean feeling something for the bad boy, Wolverine. As we learn throughout the franchise, Jean has been at Xavier’s school for quite some time. It only makes sense that she may be curious about the bad boy when she’s been with the good cop most of her life.

What to watch this Valentine’s Day: If you don’t have time for the entire X-Men franchise, stick with the original 2000 film, X-Men. It is the one that plays with this love triangle the most and still holds up as one of the best superhero movies ever made.
