7. Midnighter and Apollo (DC Comics)

This same-sex couple may not be household names and are relatively new compared to many of the pairings we’ll see on this list, but that makes their significance on this list that much greater.

These two characters debuted only in 1998 as part of Wildstorm’s Stormwatch series. They were an integral part of The Authority and eventually married. In fact, this superhero couples were so important, that they survived DC’s buyout of the Wildstorm brand, while most did not.

Throughout their time at DC, they have been relatively quiet, with Steve Orlando last writing them in the Rebirth limited series Midnighter & Apollo. However, their importance is no less in spite of their limited time — in a world where representation is hard to find, Midnighter and Apollo have stood the test of time and been well received.

It would be of no surprise if Greg Berlanti brought these characters to life either within the Arrowverse or as part of his overall deal with Warner Bros. Berlanti has made many strides for inclusion with characters like David Singh, The Ray, Earth-X Captain Cold, Sara Lance, John Constantine, Batwoman, Alex Danvers, and Dreamer to name a few.

What to read this Valentine’s Day: Stormwatch was mentioned above, but if you’re looking for something newer, Steve Orlando’s Midnighter & Apollo run is a limited series of six issues and is often considered one of the best runs of 2016.
