10 superhero couples to keep you company this Valentine’s Day
5. Peter Parker and MJ (Various Spider-Man movies)
While it’s great that The Amazing Spider-Man tried to explorer a different relationship for Peter with Gwen Stacy, Peter and MJ are one of the superhero couples that are just meant to be together. And maybe the MCU version of MJ isn’t exactly Mary Jane Watson, the homage is there; as is the chemistry.
There’s an entire history to read in the comics, but 2002’s Spider-Man is another modern-day superhero movie that helped usher in superhero films we have today. It’s still one of the best live-action Spider-Man movies and has many iconic moments between one of the most iconic superhero couples: Peter and MJ. Director Sam Raimi’s trilogy also does a great job of toying with their relationship, and one really does wonder what would have happened with them in the abandoned Spider-Man 4 movie?
This relationship also gives us, what is still nearly 20 years later, one of the most iconic kisses in film history — Spidey, upside down and in the rain, and MJ smooches him after a rescue. She doesn’t even try to find out who he is!
That same energy is found in the MCU’s iteration of these characters—perhaps even more so. While not a major factor in Homecoming, the tension of waiting for them to finally kiss in Far From Home is too much.
What to watch this Valentine’s Day: When it comes to Peter Parker and MJ, you can trim this down to two films—2002’s Spider-Man and 2019’s Far From Home. Both films have the best moments between these two characters with the MCU version getting the slight win with age believability (kids are actually playing kids!).
