Birds of Prey: 6 characters who deserve their own spinoff
4. Dinah Drake/Renee Montoya
Birds of Prey had an unexpected nod to one of the OG superheroes in DC Comics. She’s the original Black Canary, AKA Dinah Drake, and a member of the Justice League (and the Justice Society during the Golden Age). When Renee Montoya confronted Dinah Lance in her apartment about her association with Black Mask, Montoya name-dropped mama Canary. It’s a tip of the hat to a corner of the DC Universe that has never been depicted on the big screen.. However, fans of DC Comics undoubtedly know Dinah Drake’s superhero history.
In the comics, Dinah barely survives a battle on her Earth and is forced to travel from Earth-2 to Earth-1. Dinah also gains the Canary Cry. She then joins the Justice League, but it’s soon discovered that she’s dying. In a convoluted story, she had her memories transferred into her now-adult daughter’s body.
DC Comics opted to retcon her history by simply making an Earth-1 native who had a daughter, Dinah, by Larry Lance. She was a hero who inspired her daughter, although she didn’t approve. A Birds of Prey prequel could follow a young Renee Montoya and Dinah Drake in a buddy cop film.
It could lead to the tragic end of a hero who died fighting for the right side of justice. Consequently, her daughter would grow up and avoid following in her footsteps as seen in Birds of Prey. Who knows, maybe Janelle Monae, who was on the shortlist for Black Canary could play the role.
