2. Black Canary

The Black Canary is one DC hero we’ve seen depicted quite a bit in live-action projects, mostly thanks to Arrow. Jurnee Smollett-Bell is the latest actor to possess the Canary Cry. In fact, her performance ranks among the best of all-time in our opinion. Like those before her, she brought something different to the role. Bell’s Dinah was a singer and skilled martial artist, who was somewhat hesitant when it came to using her metahuman ability.

With a bleak backstory, a Dinah Lance solo movie opens the door for so many other possibilities. The fact that she ended up in Gotham with Black Mask is an interesting tale all its own. We could even see Ewan McGregor return (in a role he nailed). Their tale is one in which two unlikely allies bond after losing their parents — albeit Roman killed his. Birds of Prey gave us a little bit of history between the two. Roman “rescued” Dinah, and she, in turn, became his “little birdie.”

If that doesn’t pique your interest, perhaps we could see what life was like before Black Mask. It could be interesting to see a young Dinah in a project that feels less like a comic book movie and more like a coming of age tale in which a young woman struggles with her identity. Bell is perfectly suited for a role like that, and HBO Max is a great place for it. And if not a prequel, maybe we can see her branch off, move from Gotham to Star City.
