5. A Nation Under Our Feet

If you love a good story about politics and how it affects honorable people, then this is the story for you. This was Ta-Nehisi Coates’ first run as the writer of Black Panther, and he didn’t disappoint. On his first try, he changed the way we look at Wakanda, it’s people, T’Challa, and Shuri. He also created villains we may be able to relate to like the Midnight Angels.

When one of them was put on trial and sentenced to death, her lover broke into a prison and freed her. Then, they set out to free any Wakandan women who were enslaved. These are, of course, missions that anyone can get behind. However, they were killing. It made readers stop and think about what they would do if placed in that situation.

This is a story that would work as a movie. Wakanda has always had a king or queen as a ruler. Now, it’s a democracy. A switch like this isn’t something that happens overnight. However, it’s something the people of Wakanda wanted. The audience would get to see T’Challa trying to balance being a king and a warrior. A great quote from the story came in Black Panther No. 1 from T’Challa’s mother.

"“Then do what you must, T’Challa. But don’t lose yourself. You are not a soldier. You are a king. And it is not enough to be the sword, you must be the intelligence behind it.”"
