The Flash’s latest episode was a mind-bending adventure, but it featured the return of a classic Flash character we haven’t seen in a very long time.

Barry Allen’s list of problems got a whole lot worse in the latest episode, “Grodd Friended Me”, when the Scarlet Speedster found himself be literally trapped inside of Gorilla Grodd’s mind.

Unfortunately for him, a reunion with one of his greatest enemies wasn’t the only shock he had to deal with in this week’s installment.

Still struggling to make sense of some of the changes from Crisis On Infinite Earths, Barry discovered that perhaps too much was just too different for him. And one of them changes came in the form of an enemy-turned-ally-turned-enemy again.

Yes, the episode featured the unexpected return of Hartley Rathaway (a.k.a. Pied Piper) as he showed up in a diamond exchange. However, he had benefited from the Crisis as he now possessed a new sonic scream – much akin to Arrow‘s Black Canary and her Canary Cry – as well as the power to fly.

Portrayed by Andy Mientus, Hartley debuted in Season 1 as the villainous Pied Piper, but some timeline rewriting in the second season resulted in him becoming heroic instead. And although Mientus didn’t appear on-screen in the years that followed, Hartley was referred to on occasion as an ally of Team Flash.

Unfortunately, it seems that the Crisis has had a negative impact on him as he’s now once again the villainous Pied Piper. The question is: Can he be redeemed once more?
