In the immediate aftermath of Jughead’s death on Riverdale, Betty searches for answers and goes to extremes to keep herself, Archie and Veronica in the clear.

Well, we’re officially living in a post-flash-forward world now. Tragically, all signs still point to Jug being dead for real. But as always, anything’s possible on Riverdale.

We do at least have one concrete answer now about what happened that night, thanks to Betty going on a little hypnotic trip down memory lane. Unfortunately, it doesn’t grant Betty, Archie and Veronica that much peace of mind since everyone has a lot more questions about what happened to Jughead.

Here’s a look at “How to Get Away With Murder”… or, perhaps, how not to considering the promo for the next week’s episode. But, alas, we’re getting ahead of ourselves.

What did Donna say to Betty?

Plot twist: She didn’t. There was no secret trigger word. She drugged Betty by blowing powder into her face. Charles theorizes that it was scopolamine and, therefore, that Betty wouldn’t have been physically capable of killing her boyfriend. The more likely scenario, he says, is that Donna planted the bloody rock (a.k.a. murder weapon) in Betty’s hand before she came to.

What happened to that rock?

As anyone who found themselves holding a bloody rock over the body of their bludgeoned-to-death boyfriend would, Betty disposed of it… but not well enough apparently. She threw it into the river, only for FP to get an “anonymous” tip about a bloody rock being found on Stonewall’s campus.

But Betty has her countermove ready, enlisting the help of Charles and even Jellybean. Aside from the inherently disturbing (not to mention risky) aspect of getting an unwitting child to help you cover up her brother’s murder that you may have unwittingly committed, Betty’s plan goes off without a hitch.

Charles gets the rock from FP, offering to get it fast-tracked at Quantico, which makes no sense because Quantico would definitely have a much larger caseload than a regional crime lab. Anyway, he swaps it with a rock that Betty painted with fake blood that she borrowed from JB.

Where’s Jughead?

Determined to stay one step ahead of the Stonies, Betty tells Archie and Veronica they basically need to do something so insane their foes won’t see it coming, namely, making sure that Jug’s body is found.

So, they organize a search party and just so happen to lead FP to exactly where they put Jug’s body. And Betty’s gamble pays off. Donna is rattled, seemingly very concerned that evidence could lead back to her just as easily as it could to Betty.

So what comes next?

Betty promises Donna that if she’s going down, she’s taking Donna down with her. And it looks like Betty is indeed going down sooner than later: more specifically to jail, alongside Archie and Veronica, after being arrested for Jughead’s murder.
