With Loki’s self-titled series coming to Disney+ a year from now, we may now know who his adversaries on the show could be: Squadron Supreme.

After spending the past decade duking it out with The Avengers on the big screen, our favorite baddie, Loki, is finally getting his own television show. Even better, it’s coming to the already stacked lineup of Disney+ in 2021 for a six-episode run.

However, don’t expect him to square off once more with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes during the series, at least not as the primary antagonists opposing him. Instead, he could be squaring off with Squadron Supreme, at least that’s the impression that Bleeding Cool has gathered after learning Marvel has been ordering material for the show that’s related to members of the Squadron Supreme.

We know what you’re probably thinking right now: Who the heck is Squadron Supreme?

While the team of superheroes has yet to be adapted for the big screen, they have reigned supreme (pardon the pun) over comic lore ever since they were first created by Roy Thomas and John Buscema in 1971. Originally, the team was derived as a reimagined rechristening of a pre-existing supervillain unit called Squadron Sinister.

Recent iterations of the team are comprised of characters from alternate universes and compiled by Phil Coulson as America’s exclusive peacekeeping force, while The Avengers settle more worldwide matters.

Essentially, Squadron Supreme is Marvel’s direct equivalent to the Justice League, with members being based on the likes of Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman (among other JLA characters from DC).

While different members of the team have come and gone over the years, core members have typically included Nighthawk, Hyperion, Power Princess, Whizzer and Doctor Spectrum.

At the moment, it is unclear which members of Squadron Supreme will appear in Disney+’s Loki or if the group will even appear on the show to begin with, but we’ll provide updates as they present themselves.
