7. Hawkeye: Kate Bishop

In pretty much a complete tonal shift, we now jump to Hawkeye: Kate Bishop by Kelly Thompson and Leonardo Romero, with four issues by Michael Walsh. Basically, this is the perfect follow-up series to Matt Fraction and David Aja’s Hawkeye run, specifically the “L.A. Woman” storyline. Kate Bishop is now living in Los Angeles full-time and has a private investigation business. Well, if you know anything about how lucky either of the Hawkeyes are, then you know things go downhill pretty quickly.

What makes this run so great, is that Thompson manages to completely nail Kate’s voice, while also kind of reinventing the character. She takes the humor present in previous appearances and makes it a key part of her personality, which fits the character incredibly well.

Thompson also does a great job of showing one thing over and over again, Kate is just human. She gets hurt, she fails, she needs frozen peas to ice her face, but at the end of the day, she’s a hero and that’s what makes Kate, and this series great. Combine all that with the wonderfully expressive, stylized art that is perfect for this type of humorous series and that’s the perfect winning combination right there.
