Stargirl could end up crossing over with The Flash at some point, and there really is a multiverse of possibilities for how to make that happen.

DC Universe and The CW are getting a new superhero series: Stargirl. The show centers around Courtney Whitmore (Brec Bassinger), a high school student who discovers that her step-father, Pat Dugan (Luke Wilson) was the sidekick of the legendary superhero known as Starman. Courtney gets ahold of Starman’s staff and becomes his successor, Stargirl. Aided by Pat in a robot suit, Stargirl forms a new Justice Society of America to protect the world from the Injustice Society.

IGN sat down for an interview with Stargirl herself, Brec Bassinger, and the character’s co-creator and show’s executive producer, Geoff Johns. The interview provided some great details about the show, and it also revealed a fascinating piece of information. According to Bassinger, there were initially talks to have Stargirl pop up in an episode of The Flash:

"“There have been talks of Stargirl getting to go on an episode of [‘Flash’], and having a bigger storyline, but it didn’t happen this season. But I just think that would be the coolest thing. So much of my family has watched [‘Flash’] for years.”"

While that didn’t end up happening, there is hope for fans eager to see the two shows crossover. Johns revealed that, even though the plan at the moment is to focus on Stargirl and her journey, it’s possible the Scarlet Speedster will run (no pun intended) into the young hero at some point in the future :

"“The future is wide open in the DC multiverse, so anything can happen between film and TV […] Obviously, right now the main concern is making sure that this show is great, that these characters are great, that they have their own stories and they get the proper screen time and the proper episodes to develop on their own. So hopefully in the future we can do something fun, but the first season is all about making sure that ‘Stargirl’ is the best show it can possibly be.”"

From his comments, it seems Stargirl is taking a similar approach to Black Lighting. The show avoided tying into larger superhero worlds for its first two years, which gave Black Lighting the opportunity to become his own character before officially joining the Arrowverse. Given how this is Stargirl’s first protagonist role, it’s a great choice to have her stand on her own for a while before considering having her tie into the Arrowverse.

A Universe of Exciting Possibilities

Even though nothing is official yet, there are some very interesting story possibilities attached to a potential team-up between The Flash and Stargirl. Crisis on Infinite Earths showed us that the multiverse still existed, even after the heroes’ Earths-shattering final fight. As we mentioned above, the crossover showed that a few alternate Earths were still hanging around, such as Stargirl’s Earth-2 and even Green Lantern’s Earth-12.

However, while we as audiences know the multiverse is still a thing, the characters of Earth-Prime don’t seem to have that knowledge.

For them, the multiverse concept died. Therefore, the idea of Flash coming into contact with a new alternate Earth after experiencing everything he experienced during Crisis could be a game-changer for his show and others, such as Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow (especially since the latter had its own version of Stargirl). Of course, as mentioned above, we need to keep in mind that this crossover isn’t happening yet, so it’s best to wait and see what happens before speculating too much.

A Different Kind of Flash

Funnily enough, though, while there’s still nothing concrete in regards to Grant Gustin’s Barry Allen showing up to battle villains alongside Courtney Whitmore, Geoff Johns confirmed during his sit-down with IGN that the Jay Garrick version of the Scarlet Speedster will be referenced throughout the show.

"“[Green Lantern and Flash] are spoken of and they exist in the JSA. There’s a picture of them in the first episode, and there’s plans in the future for things, but Jay Garrick and Alan Scott, to me, are always the elderly statesmen […] They are a part of the original JSA and their legacies will be felt throughout the show.”"

We don’t know exactly how Garrick will tie into the show’s overall story, but it looks like he’ll be an important piece of the puzzle as the series moves forward. The possibility of seeing a new live-action Jay Garrick is quite exciting, and it also makes the prospect of a Stargirl/Flash crossover even more fun.
