The Flash season 6 returned to The CW in a shocking episode which saw a long-standing character leave Central City.

It’s been a rough couple of months for Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) and all of his Team Flash buddies. Having defeated Bloodwork and even managing to overcome the long-teased Crisis On Infinite Earths, you’d think the death-defying Scarlet Speedster and his gang of heroes would be given an overdue break, but that’s not how things worked out for them on The Flash season 6.

After a month off screens, the show returned this week with the sixteenth episode of its sixth season and the calamities kept on coming for the Central City citizens. In fact, things got so bad that one Flash stalwart ended up leaving town indefinitely.

Joseph Carver (Eric Nenninger) hadn’t taken too kindly to Captain Joe West’s (Jesse L. Martin) investigation into his dodgy dealings, so he and Black Hole reached out to Rag Doll (Troy James) and hired him to kill the CCPD Captain.

Ever the determined detective, Joe remained defiant throughout the episode as he refused to budge in spite of the threat. However, whenever that threat became too real and he and his partner Cecile Horton (Dani Nicolet) were almost killed, he eventually caved and decided to follow through on the witness protection program suggested by Captain Singh (Patrick Sabongui).

With that, an emotional Joe left Central City as the FBI took him to safety and his departure ensured that his family would remain safe. However, while Carver will no longer be after him, it turns out that the person who secretly orchestrated his escape was none other than Eva McCulloch (Efrat Dor).

Has Joe left Central City for good? The answer is probably no. But will he return before the end of the season? The answer to that one remains uncertain.
