The Flash just killed a former character off-screen
This week’s episode of The Flash revealed that a minor character died off-screen. Did you catch it?
After a long period of uncertainty and a lot of rescheduling, The Flash finally returned to The CW – and it did so in epic fashion.
“So Long and Goodnight” saw Joseph Carver (Eric Nenninger) recruit Flash rogue Rag Doll (Troy James) to kill Joe West (Jesse L. Martin) after the CCPD Detective began getting too close to the truth in his investigation into McCulloch Tech.
The return of Rag Doll led to another confrontation between the villain and the Scarlet Speedster, as Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) sought to use what little of his speed he had left in order to stop the villainous contortionist. In doing so, however, he discovered that Rag Doll’s muse – so to speak- had died.

As he was cuffed to the railing, Rag Doll revealed that his mother, Theresa Merkel, had died from a heart attack. As there was no one left to suffer, he was hoping to die in the explosion from the bomb that was designed to kill Joe so that he could be released from his own suffering. However, that was not to be as Joe, with Barry’s help, figured out a way to save his family and himself.
Fans will remember that Theresa Merkel appeared in season 5 episode 5, “All Doll’d Up”. Portrayed by Judith Maxie (who coincidentally also appeared as Judge Hobart in season 2 of Supergirl), the matriarch of the Merkel family was a philanthropist and socialite who founded the Merkel Foundation. She had become estranged from her son after he tried to break into her home.
It seems that getting revenge on his mother was Peter’s sole drive in life, so it’s possible that he may not return after this. RIP Theresa Merkel.
The Flash returns to The CW next Tuesday, April 28, at 8:00 p.m. ET. Did you catch the reference to the character’s death? Let us know in the comments below!
