Star Wars: A new series is in the works at Disney Plus
By Scott Brown
Star Wars continues to grow its presence on Disney Plus as another series for the streaming service is reportedly in development.
Variety is reporting that a new Star Wars series is being developed for Disney Plus by Russian Doll co-creator, showrunner, and executive producer Leslye Headland.
This will be the fifth Star Wars show that is being developed for Disney Plus after The Mandalorian, a Cassian Andor series, an Obi-Wan Kenobi series, and the final season of The Clone Wars.
There are no big details on plot or featured characters yet other than that “it will be a female-centric series that takes place in a different part of the ‘Star Wars’ timeline than other projects.” Headland will reportedly be writing for the show, as well as the showrunner, with the rest of the writing room currently staffing.

Just from Russian Doll alone, Headland seems like the perfect talent to bring into the Star Wars universe. Russian Doll was nominated for 13 Emmys for the first season of the show, of which it ended up winning 3 of its nominations. Beyond her work on Russian Doll though, Headland has written and directed the feature films Bachelorette and Sleeping with Other People and has served as a writer on Terriers, Black Monday, and SMILF.
This news comes just a day after Variety also reported that Disney Plus’ first Star Wars series, The Mandalorian, was already moving forward on pre-production for its third season, despite the fact that the second season hasn’t premiered yet. And just last week, it was reported that Stellan Skarsgard and Kyle Soller had been cast in the upcoming Cassian Andor series on Disney Plus. Beyond just the news sphere though, the first part of “The Siege of Mandalore” arc on The Clone Wars aired last Friday, signaling the beginning of the end for said series.
