Captain Joe West left Central City in an emotional moment when Black Hole forced him into Witness Protection. Has this beloved The Flash character left for good?

Team Flash has really had a hard time on The Flash Season 6. After dealing with the onslaught of Bloodwork and even overcoming the Crisis, Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) and his super friends of the Arrowverse have now been faced with a new enemy in the corrupt Black Hole.

Employed by Joseph Carver (Eric Nenninger) of McCulloch Tech, Rag Doll and Black Hole set their sights on Joe West (Jesse L. Martin) in last week’s returning episode of The Flash “So Long and Goodnight”. It seems that the veteran detective got much too close to the truth for their liking.

Though Joe outright refused to enter witness protection – in spite of Barry Allen’s (Grant Gustin) pleas – his hand was inevitably forced whenever Rag Doll targeted his family: Cecile Horton (Danielle Nicolet) and their baby daughter Jenna.

But has The Flash veteran really left the show, or will the CCPD Captain return to apprehend Black Hole?

Has Joe West left The Flash for good?

There’s no denying that Joe’s departure felt kind of permanent. From the emotional music playing during his farewell moment to the fact that he left without taking Cecile and baby Jenna with him, there was an air of finality about it.

As fans are no longer expecting the CCPD Captain to appear in the coming episodes, it does beg the question as to whether Jesse L. Martin has really stepped away from Central City.

Given the reduced episode count that The Flash season 6 will have – it will only have 19 episodes as opposed to the usual 22 because production was shut down early due to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus – it’s highly likely that we’ve seen the last of Martin’s Joe West for this season.

He probably would have returned in time for the finale – or after Black Hole was defeated. However, as the season won’t get to complete its narrative, it’s looking like we’ve seen the last of Joe… for now.

Thankfully, once production resumes on the show and the season 6 narrative is presumably wrapped up in the opening episodes of season 7, there’s no reason as to why he won’t return.
