Grant Gustin’s current contract ends following The Flash season 7 but the Arrowverse star has revealed that talks of an extension were halted.

So far, 17 episodes of a truncated sixth season of The Flash have aired on The CW with a mere two episodes left. Back in January, the show received a renewal for season 7, but due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, production on season 6 was forced to shut down prematurely, meaning that some of the leftover plots will have to resume next season.

However, as revealed by TVLine, the star of the Fastest Man Alive’s show – Grant Gustin – was on Smallville alum Michael Rosenbaum’s podcast, Inside of You, and he spoke of the future plans for the show. The Flash star had this to say:

"“The conversations actually had started already for adding a potential eighth and ninth [season], but then this pandemic happened, and everything has stopped.”"

As many know by now, the entertainment industry as a whole has come to a standstill due to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus. Productions in Hollywood and Vancouver have shutdown with the timetable for the return of such films and shows up in the air. “We don’t know when we’re back,” Gustin also said, adding that he doesn’t “know when we’re going to continue the renegotiation talks.”

Gustin, while still enthused with The Flash, did admit to missing out on some opportunities due to a busy schedule.

"“The Flash has been so amazing, but we’re six years in now and the past four [summer] hiatuses I have had a project that has fallen through because of Flash. There are a lot of opportunities that have gone away because of schedule conflicts. You just can’t have everything.”"

The fact that Warner Bros. Television plus Berlanti and company are already planning subsequent seasons beyond The Flash season 7 shows that they are more than willing to keep the show alive.

Fans have certainly been more responsive to the sixth season – thanks to the new approach from current showrunner Eric Wallace.

Season 6 will return to screens once more this coming week with its upcoming eighteenth episode. Titled “Pay The Piper”, it will see the returns of both Godspeed and Team Flash frenemy Hartley Rathaway aka Pied Piper (Andy Mientus). Fans who have been enjoying season 6 will know that due to the world’s reset of sorts following Crisis on Infinite Earths, Pied Piper has once again become an adversary towards the heroic speedster and Team Flash.

The Flash airs on The CW on Tuesday nights at 8:00 p.m ET. Are you looking forward to season 7? Do you hope it returns for seasons 8 and 9? Let us know in the comments below!
