Riverdale will be making some huge changes to its format at the beginning of its fifth season, and it could change the dynamic of the show forever.

Riverdale is undoubtedly one of television’s most polarizing shows. The CW’s young adult mystery thriller has been on the air since the beginning of 2017, and each season it attempts to outdo the madness with some of the most jaw-dropping storylines imaginable.

Though some of those storylines are drastically different, others are frustratingly similar. However, there will be no danger of the latter happening in the show’s upcoming fifth season.

According to Riverdale showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, the show will be taking a major time jump early on in season 5. He told TVLine in an exclusive interview:

"“We’ve been talking and planning on doing a time jump… and of course, usually time jumps happen in between seasons, because there’s a tease at the very end.”"

Now, you’re probably thinking “But what about the unexpectedly-abrupt ending of season 4?”, referring to the fact that the outbreak of the novel coronavirus shut down production on Riverdale (and virtually every other major film and TV production in the world), but don’t worry as Sacasa assures fans that the next offering will start off by completing those episodes first.

"“…it felt like maybe what we’ll do is start with the last three episodes… So what we’re doing is picking up right where we left off for the first three episodes, and then doing a time jump… after those three episodes."

The idea of Riverdale doing a time jump has been talked about for some time, but it seems that this is finally the time to make it happen. Though the exact details have yet to be worked out, TVLine has confirmed that it’s expected to be a significant time jump, spanning at most five years.

That would, of course, take the gang past their college years, meaning that their ages would be more in-line with the actual ages of the actors playing them. And while that would certainly be an interesting idea, it could cause some major rifts for the characters involved… or perhaps those rifts are what ultimately results in them going in separate directions (if that is indeed what happens).

Could this have anything to do with the controversial kiss between Betty Cooper and Archie Andrews? We’ll have to wait and see…
