10 must-read comic books for the return of Marvel Comics
By Mark Lynch
1. X-Men
Writer: Jonathan Hickman
Last but not least is Jonathan Hickman’s X-Men. After the greatness of House of X and Powers of X, Hickman was going to have to deliver a heck of a run. After all, he changed the history and future of mutants in around three months; how was he ever going to top that? By taking the story he told and evolving the mutant race and how people see them.
Mutants now have their own nation recognized by most countries in the world. They have a council to make laws, a C.I.A./black ops of sorts, and a pharmaceutical export that increases the lifespan of humans and cures most diseases. Hickman created a world unlike anything the mutants have experienced. It may be greater than Genosha – especially since it wasn’t built on the backs of mutant slaves.
The lives of mutants have dramatically changed. Some aspects like being outcast and feared by some still exist, but new challenges have come up too. With the resurrection protocols, Nightcrawler has thought about creating a new mutant religion. Any mutant that kills a human will be brought before the Quiet Council of Krakoa and possibly imprisoned in Krakoa itself. Not surprising to anyone, Sabretooth was the first to get brought before them and punished. And these are only a couple of the problems they’ve faced.
The adventures of the X-Men continue to be great stories. The difference now is they have more to lose than ever. It’s going to make for even more breathtaking and heartbreaking stories for the characters in the future.
