10 must-read comic books for the return of Marvel Comics
By Mark Lynch
10. Miles Morales: Spider-Man
Writer: Saladin Ahmed
Miles Morales hasn’t been around for 10 years yet. However, he has successfully hit the big-screen (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) and multiple ongoing series. His current run is no different. Writer Saladin Ahmed has done an amazing job keeping the spirit of Miles Morales alive and well. A lot of people (this writer included) was worried about Miles’ next step after Brian Michael Bendis stopped writing his character. Thankfully there was no need to worry. Saladin is doing a fantastic job.
He’s acknowledged both Miles’ Latin and Black heritage – an incredibly important part of his character. Having Miles narrate his story via his journal was a nice idea. It added a personal touch and offers something different from the normal comic book narration. He’s also given Miles some fun stories and hit on more than just him punching criminals. He’s touched on maintaining a love life while being Spider-Man, important topics and issues, as well as Miles’ overall desire of wanting to do more than just be a superhero.
You also have artist Javier Garron drawing Miles and his friends in current clothing and having the former doing incredible things as Spider-Man. He’s made Miles Morales’ Spider-Man look as good (if not better) than any artist to date.
With the series going into the Outlawed crossover, this may be the perfect time to catch up.
