8. Immortal Hulk

Writer: Al Ewing

This isn’t the Hulk you’re used to reading in Marvel Comics. This is a Hulk that’s scarier than anything you’ve seen. That’s saying a lot. This is a guy who’s stomped so hard he almost broke the eastern seaboard (World War Hulk), someone who once took on the entire X-Men roster and won. All of that, and he is just more frightening in general.

Writer Al Ewing created a Hulk that is like something from a horror film. During the day, Bruce Banner is in charge. At night, the Hulk comes out. Not just any Hulk. This one is referred to as Devil Hulk. He’s tougher, smarter, and more ruthless than any incarnation of the Hulk we’ve ever seen. Sometimes it even seems like he takes pleasure in hurting people. The Devil Hulk gave Thor a concussion. He purposely got himself captured to infiltrate a base trying to kill him. It also doesn’t look like he can die either.

Al Ewing used Roxxon CEO Dario Agger as the Hulk’s first antagonist. After everything he did to Thor and Earth during Jason Aaron’s run of Thor (and War of the Realms), this was perfect. It gave the Hulk a devious and cunning monster to go after.

This was also another book that left us with a major cliffhanger as a classic Hulk villain made his return.
