10 must-read comic books for the return of Marvel Comics
By Mark Lynch
7. Deadpool
Writer: Kelly Thompson
The Merc With a Mouth isn’t an easy character to write. This isn’t just a guy who makes jokes and shoots people. Those elements are there but they have to be balance with the deep and tortured character of Wade Wilson that lies underneath it all. Not every writer understands this. Thankfully, Kelly Thompson proved that she did when she took over as the writer of Deadpool.
Thompson has taken Wade and turned him into something we never thought we’d see. Deadpool is a king. That’s right. The guy who can’t decide whether or not to live or die is in charge. But it makes sense when you find out who he’s leading. He’s the King of Monsters.
This might seem like a silly idea to some. And it is, but it’s entertaining and it adds a great deal to Deadpool’s character. When Captain America showed up to tell Wade what to do, he immediately called Cap out on his bias. It didn’t appear that Cap saw the monsters as beings who deserved to be safe. Deadpool let him know that he wasn’t going to tolerate anyone attacking his people, showing us that when Deadpool was thrown into situation this, he could take it seriously.
An added bonus is we also get Elsa Bloodstone: A fairly new character that has the potential to be a fan-favorite. She curses, she’s funny, and kills monsters good. You can tell that there’s going to be more to her as this series progresses. If she isn’t enough, there’s also the unforgettable Jeff the Landshark.
