10 must-read comic books for the return of Marvel Comics
By Mark Lynch
4. Black Panther: The Intergalactic Empire of Wakanda
Writer: Ta-Nehisi Coates
Ta-Nehisi Coates started his Marvel Comics run with a classic Black Panther arc called A Nation Under Our Feet back in 2016. In 2018, T’Challa left Earth to spread the Nation of Wakanda to space. Then, T’Challa went from being a King of Wakanda to an intergalactic slave. If that wasn’t bad enough, T’Challa woke up without any recollection of who he was or where he was from. Despite the loss of memory, he knew injustice when he saw it and started a revolution to help anyone enslaved.
There is more to the story, but we’ll not go into detail because it shouldn’t be spoiled. However, Black Panther: The Intergalactic Empire of Wakanda mixed a few things that people love. First and foremost, Black Panther characters – some of whom you’ll recognize from the comics, others who got a makeover from the Black Panther movie. Next, space travel and intergalactic fights. Who would have known we needed T’Challa fighting in outer space in our lives? Lastly, outstanding artwork.
Daniel Acuna and Ryan Bodenheim were perfect for the series. Regardless of them having different styles, they both did an amazing job of displaying intense moments. They also pulled off the challenge of creating multiple alien beings: A feat not easily accomplished, but it was done to perfection.
As much as you won’t want the series to end, you won’t be able to wait to see how each issue concludes.
