The Batwoman season one finale was originally supposed to include a throwback to Kate and Kara’s friendship.

Batwoman concluded its first season with a spectacular finale that has left viewers excited for the show’s return. Alice (Rachel Skarsten) created an insidious new villain and has the key to killing her arch-nemesis, her twin sister Kate Kane (Ruby Rose), aka Batwoman. What Alice is missing is a key ingredient in building her weapon – Kryptonite.

The moment we heard Kryptonite was in play, many of us expected Supergirl/Kara Danvers (Melissa Benoist) to show up in some form. The impromptu finale, however, didn’t feature Supergirl, but she almost did make some kind .

According to TVLine, Batwoman creator Caroline Dries revealed that Kate’s stash of Kryptonite was originally hidden in a picture frame holding a photo of Kate and Kara together. Unfortunately, due to the lockdown and production being shut down, Rose and Benoist were unable to have the photograph taken together, and hence the Supergirl cameo had to be cut.

More from Arrowverse

Kate and Kara bonded from the moment they met in the Elseworlds crossover and became even closer during Crisis on Infinite Earths. Echoing her cousin’s distrust in super-powered beings, Kate had stolen future-Bruce Wayne’s Kryptonite, but she never needed to use it because Supergirl proved herself to be a hero at every turn. When Kara found out about the fragment Kate possessed, she asked her to keep the Kryptonite in good faith. In the finale, Kate refused to destroy this piece since she’d promised to hold it for her friend.

For fans hoping to see the two friends team-up again, Dries has stated that the shooting schedules of the shows don’t match up, which means we’re unlikely to see Supergirl on the show for a while. Next year’s Arrowverse crossover will instead take place between Batwoman and Superman & Lois.

Though Kate was dealt a crushing blow by her father’s betrayal in the season finale, she now has a solid team of Luke Fox (Camrus Johnson) and Mary Hamilton (Nicole Kang). Kate revealed to her team that she had one last piece of Kryptonite, so we can only imagine this fragment will play a significant role in the Alice storyline next season.
