Batwoman: 5 ways to explain Kate Kane’s recasting in-show
By Mike McNulty
Solution 5: There is no explanation
By contrast, this would be the easiest scenario. Instead of explaining why Kate Kane no longer looks like Ruby Rose, don’t explain it at all. No physical disfigurement, multiverse-hopping, conspiracy theories, and all the other usual reasons Batwoman’s writing team can come up with to justify why Kate is played by a different actress. Just say this is the same Kate Kane regardless and leave it at that.
Is it a little lazy? Sure, but it also means not wasting precious screen time. It also means requiring a little bit of what we call imagination. Also, despite some hand-wringing from some fans, the general audience would accept this.
Besides, replacing actors to play the same character has been done in movies and television for decades, with the idea that the stories take place within the same “universe.” Remember, in the Tim Burton and Joel Schumacher Batman movies, Bruce Wayne was portrayed by Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, and George Clooney, all of whom don’t look anything alike. No one seemed to have a problem believing each actor was playing the same Batman back then.
It’s only in recent times, in the age of reboots, that we search for “reasons” for why the same character looks like a different person. And who’s to say that Batwoman wouldn’t follow suit?
