J.K. Simmons comments on the future of J. Jonah Jameson in Spider-Man 3
J.K. Simmons has confirmed when we could see Spider-Man’s J. Jonah Jameson pop up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe next.
J.K. Simmons shocked the world when he made an unexpected appearance in last year’s Spider-Man: Far From Home. The veteran actor is, of course, best known for portraying the Daily Bugle’s J. Jonah Jameson in Sam Raimi’s classic Tobey Maguire-starring Spider-Man trilogy, so to see him reprise the role so suddenly in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was pretty jaw-dropping.
Jameson popped up in a post-credit scene when he, using heavily-doctored footage from Mysterio that implied Spider-Man killed the villain, revealed that Spidey’s true identity was Peter Parker to the world.
A moment that resulted in shock and awe for not just Spidey but fans all over the world, many of us wondered if this was just a fun cameo or if the MCU had bigger plans for Jameson. Now, it turns out that it could be the latter.
J. Jonah Jameson could return in two sequels
Speaking on a recent episode of PeopleTV’s Couch Surfing series, Simmons was asked if fans could expect him to return in the third MCU Spider-Man film. He seemed enthusiastic, responding:
"“I don’t know if I would use the word expect… When we signed on for the first movie, we signed a contract to do two sequels as well. Which is always – I guess not always, but in my case – a one-sided contract where you’re committed to do it, but they’re not necessarily committed to use your character in ensuing movies.”"
This definitely sounds like the kind of contract many actors within the MCU possess, allowing them to show up in certain movies throughout the franchise depending on what the creative team desires to happen. So it’s solely at the discretion of Sony/Marvel Studios right now and thus, a return may or may not happen. However, it’s safe to say fans will be excited at even the prospect of him appearing in another one.
Simmons himself was thrilled to appear in Far From Home because of the legacy he was part of in the previous films, adding:
"“It’s great to have the opportunity, as these things evolve, to be one of the holdovers from the previous version.”"
It was certainly great to see him take part in the latest Spider-Man film, so let’s hope he returns once more.
The as-of-yet untitled Spider-Man 3 is set to be released on November 21, 2021. Would you like to see Jameson make an appearance? Do you think he’ll make his presence felt elsewhere in the MCU? Let us know in the comments below!
