4. John Constantine

In the brief history that Justice League Dark has existed as a team, John Constantine has been there every step of the way, being appointed the official leader of the team in the ninth issue of Justice League Dark.

It seems almost a given that if anybody is going to join the cast of Justice League Dark for HBO Max, it is going to be John Constantine. In the case that it does feel arbitrary to argue for it as if there was ever a chance that HBO Max would ignore him, then this writer also wants to take the time to give readers the next best thing: An argument for who should play the man.

And that man, obviously, should be the same man who has played Constantine for over five years now: Matt Ryan.

My colleague, Mark Lynch, actually already campaigned for Matt Ryan to reprise the role for HBO Max and I think that sentiment is worth echoing. Whether he did so for NBC or for The CW, Ryan perfectly embodied the Constantine character as if he was lifted straight from the comic books.

Ryan has joined the ranks of J.K. Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson and Hugh Jackman as Wolverine in terms of actors in superhero media who are too good to be replaced because it’s hard to imagine anyone else filling their shoes. As long as Ryan is willing and able to make the jump, HBO Max must give him a call.
