Has the Riverdale spin-off Katy Keene been cancelled or renewed by The CW?

Fans of Katy Keene have been wondering if The CW’s freshman comedy-drama would be renewed for a second season for some time now, but unfortunately, the network has opted not to renew it.

According to Deadline, the show was cancelled as the result of low viewing figures with little catch-up increase as well as the fact that, despite showing promise in the streaming numbers, it wasn’t able to bring in the audiences that fellow CW freshman shows Batwoman and Nancy Drew were on Warner Bros.’ new streaming service HBO Max.

Katy Keene is a spin-off of The CW’s mega-hit Riverdale and it debuted on our screens back in February. It stars Lucy Hale as the titular character, who as an aspiring fashion designer, hopes to make it in New York City. She’s soon joined in her quest to make her dreams come true by fellow dreamers Pepper Smith (Julia Chan), Jorge Lopez (Jonny Beauchamp) and new arrival Josie McCoy (Riverdale‘s Ashleigh Murray).

The show also stars Katherine LaNasa as Gloria Grandbilt, Lucien Laviscount as Alexander Cabot, Camille Hyde as Alexandra Cabot and Zane Holtz as K.O. Kelly.

The show’s executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, some of the creative team and the cast (including Hale herself) have all taken to social media to post emotional messages and thank fans for their passion for the series.

Is there hope for Katy Keene season 2?

Though Katy Keene will not be returning to The CW next season, all is not lost for the show just yet. Deadline has revealed that the studio behind it, Warner Bros. Television, is indeed planning to explore other options in order to get the show a new home.

The CW’s previous extension of the cast’s contracts has reportedly given them until July 31 to find another way to save the show.

It goes without saying that the most likely option would be HBO Max considering that it’s a Warner service that currently has the  streaming rights to the first season. Whether or not that actually happens remains to be seen, but it’s a ray of hope – and considering how much we all love Katy Keene, that’s exactly what we need right now!
