Supergirl

Similar to Batwoman, the success of Supergirl tells us that the character has big screen potential. Only, in this case, Hollywood already tried to take a stab at bringing the character to celluloid, although many audiences may have forgotten this fact already.

The character got their own self-titled spinoff in 1984 as a spirited sequel to Christopher Reeves’ Superman franchise. Helen Slater starred in the title role alongside some of the screen’s biggest acting legends: Faye Dunaway, Peter O’Toole and Peter Cook. This had all the ingredients for a classic in the making, yet it infamously turned out to be one of the worst superhero movies of all time.

On top of just being a bad movie, Supergirl – as a character and a film – was a hard sell to mainstream audiences because this came at a time when the superhero/comic book movie subgenre in general was a hard sell to the public, hence why the movie flopped at the box office.

This is a different story in 2020, where the comic book movie market is flourishing more now than it ever has before. Even better, between both comic book fans and non-comic book readers, the Supergirl character has a ready-made audience now, especially thanks to five strong seasons and counting for The CW show and Melissa Benoist’s incredible portrayal of the character.

Now is the time for Warner Bros. to capitalize on the character’s newfound worldwide popularity by crafting a big screen counterpart.
