The latest episode of Stargirl caught us all off-guard with a major death that nobody saw coming. Spoilers for season 1, episode 10 ahead…

Stargirl has wasted little time impressing audiences. The freshman DC Universe series hasn’t shied away from ambitious storylines since it first hit screens, but lately, it’s been upping the ante in a huge way.

That being said, the most recent installment, season 1 episode 10, “Brainwave Jr.” was undoubtedly its most game-changing thus far.

What happened in Stargirl season 1, episode 10?

“Brainwave Jr.” was split into two major arcs that eventually came together in the end. The first one focused on Barbara Whitmore’s (Amy Smart) discovery that daughter Courtney (Brec Bassinger) was really Stargirl and that her husband Pat Dugan (Luke Wilson) used to be Starman’s (Joel McHale) sidekick Stripesy and was now the superhero known as S.T.R.I.P.E.

The second storyline saw Henry King Jr. (Jake Austin Walker) continue to struggle with his newfound abilities, all while reconciling it with the fact that his newly-awake father Henry Sr. (Christopher James Baker) is the villainous Brainwave. However, while he initially bonded with his father (who couldn’t remember anything from the last 10 years), he soon discovered that there wasn’t anything he could do to save him.

Henry assisted the Justice Society of America – Stargirl, Yolanda Montez/Wildcat (Yvette Monreal), Beth Chapel/Dr. Mid-Nite (Anjelika Washington) and Rick Tyler/Hourman (Cameron Gellman) – in heading into Dragon King/Dr. Ito’s (Nelson Lee) lair in order to retrieve his father – who Ito was attempting to cure of his amnesia – and Courtney’s Cosmic Staff. Though they successfully rescued them both, they were too late for Henry Sr. who now remembered that he was Brainwave.

Revealing that he was the one who killed his wife, he offered his son the chance to stand by his side and change the world together, but Henry proved how much of a hero he truly was and stood against him. Unfortunately, his father killed him in front of the JSA as a result.

Is Henry King Jr. really dead on Stargirl?

Henry’s death scene was easily the show’s most harrowing moment yet. It was also incredibly emotional as the former bully proved that he does have a heart and that he was willing to see the good in the world – refusing to allow his abilities to corrupt the beauty that still existed.

Henry also saved the JSA from Brainwave, stood against the terrible current version of his father and apologized to Yolanda for hurting her before he was seemingly killed by the collapsing tunnel.

It seems like the show went to great lengths to wrap up Henry’s arc, so it does seem like his death could be permanent. That said, he also has mental abilities and we didn’t actually see him get crushed… so there’s always a chance that he could return.

Here’s hoping he does make a surprise comeback because Henry was the hero that the JSA didn’t know they needed.
