Who Inspired Anne Hathaway And Tom Hardy’s Performances?

Speaking of Heath Ledger, it is well known at this point that he walked on to the set with a multitude of inspirations to play The Joker, such as Tom Waits (for his voice). However, when it came time for Anne Hathaway and Tom Hardy to respectively play Catwoman and Bane for the sequel, the two actors came onboard with their own bits of inspiration.

For Hathaway, she looked towards Hedy Lamarr, a 1940-50s era actress who starred in films like Samson and Delilah and Dishonored Lady, on top of serving as the original inspiration for Catwoman in the classic Batman comic books of old. Interestingly enough, Hathaway to Hero Complex cites Lamarr’s “extraordinary” breathing as something she tried to duplicate.

As for Hardy, he was keen on studying Bartley Gorman when it came time to try and nail down a voice for Bane. For those unfamiliar with the name, Bartley Gorman was an Irishman who spent years in the United Kingdom fighting as an undefeated bare knuckle boxer.

It is also worth noting that Gorman was a Romani gypsy and without appropriating Latino culture, Hardy hoped to take inspiration from someone of Romani Latin descent.
