Ending Was Told, Not Written

Speaking of the script, it is a miracle that nothing major from the movie script got leaked out before the film’s release. In this day and age – especially thanks to the internet and social media – it is 10 times easier for a big scene from a film script or even the ending of a major Hollywood production to get leaked before the film’s release. Wouldn’t be the first time.

Luckily, such a fate did not befall The Dark Knight Rises, but that is only because Christopher Nolan had a clever plan to avoid spoilers from getting out: He spoke to his cast about the ending rather than write it into the script.

Per Gary Oldman in an interview with Contactmusic (h/t Digital Spy), Nolan only allowed for scripts to be hand delivered to actors like Oldman, while “newer people” (assuming he means those outside of the main cast) needed to read the script in Nolan’s office. As for the ending, Oldman mentioned that the last few pages of the script were blank.

If the cast wanted to know how the film ended, they needed to talk to Nolan about the ending in person. He refused to have anything about the end in writing.
