Black Adam: Casting the Justice Society of America heroes in the DCEU
Green Lantern – Luke Evans
Ask novice fans about the first Green Lantern and you’ll likely hear the name, Hal Jordan. In the pages of DC Comics, the first person to call himself Green Lantern, however, was Alan Scott. Unlike the Green Lanterns, his power source was a literal lantern he found on a train while working as an engineer. An evildoer placed explosives on his train, killing everyone — except him of course. The powers inside the lantern told Alan to carve a ring and absorb the powers within it. Thus the Green Lantern was born.
Being the first-ever Green Lantern wasn’t the only milestone that Scott achieved. In the New 52 reboot, he was DC’s first openly gay superhero. So, when it comes to casting, why not have fair representation for the LGBTQ community by having a great actor like Luke Evans play the role? The Dracula Untold actor is an action vet who even clashed with The Rock in Fast and Furious 6.
He’s appeared in all genres, from drama to comedy, aiding in his ability to bring versatility to the role of Alan Scott. His presence as Alan would allow the film to have that veteran presence necessary for the founding members of JSA. With Atom Smasher being young and easily influenced by Black Adam, having older, seasoned actors play the roles of older, seasoned heroes would certainly make sense.
