X-Men: How will the story end for the mutants of Krakoa?
By Mark Lynch
Should this affect the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
After 20th Century Fox’s divisive approach to the X-Men in theaters, the franchise is something that must be dealt with delicately whenever it returns to the big screen. Marvel Studios now have the opportunity to take the mutants and bring them to their true glory.
We’ve seen how newer stories can make their way to the films. Captain America: Civil War is a perfect example of this.
That said, though the current state of X-Men and mutants is great right now in the comics, using this story arc to bring them into the MCU would be a huge mistake.
Comic book fans may know the history of the X-Men, but the average fan may not. There are people that will see the movies who don’t know that mutants are hated and feared. Giving them their own island nation without explanation would be catastrophic. We’d miss the build up that made Powers of X and House of X storylines such a monumental and special moment in comics.
The tale should be told at some point, but maybe not in theaters. This is something that works better as an animated series – perhaps one that goes straight to Disney Plus. This way, they can get into all of the finer points of the story. Rushing never helped anyone. Don’t believe me? Go back and think of how bad both live-action attempts at the Dark Phoenix narrative were.
