The Doom Patrol season 2 finale has arrived, but why was the season only nine episodes long?

Doom Patrol season 2 has been entertaining fans for a number of weeks now. The show is undoubtedly one of the most popular shows on DC Universe.

The DC Comics series – which now also streams on HBO Max – was a major hit with fans when its first season streamed in 2019,  which ensured that everyone was excited for its second.

Doom Patrol season 2 arrived a little over a month ago on both streaming services and it has been as gloriously wacky as fans hoped it would. However, it has now suddenly reached its conclusion, leaving some fans a little confused.

Why is Doom Patrol season 2 shorter?

One thing that didn’t help with the feeling that Doom Patrol‘s second season came and went in the blink of an eye is the fact that both DC Universe and HBO Max dropped the first three episodes at once, making its run shorter by two weeks. However, that doesn’t change the fact that season 2 was shorter than expected.

It turns out the season was actually supposed to be 10 episodes long. Actress Abigail Shapiro (who plays newcomer Dorothy on the second season) revealed to Insider that the creative team had planned a 10-episode run but that the outbreak of the novel coronavirus forced them to reduce it to nine episodes. She commented:

"It was basically all finished… There was going to be one more episode and we only had a couple of scenes left, but we never got to finish that episode.”"

She added that she didn’t know if the 10th episode “is ever going to air or anything”.

Doom Patrol was one of the many productions affected by the TV and film shutdown due to COVID-19, but until this revelation, it wasn’t clear how it had been specifically affected.

A 10-episode run is still down significantly from season 1’s 15-episode-run, but it still would have been nice to see how the creative team initially planned to round out the season.

Will this mostly-filmed but incomplete finale ended up kicking off a potential third season?
