Stargirl: Who is DC Comics villain Eclipso and how will he feature in season 2?
Stargirl’s season 1 finale featured a tease of next season’s major villain and it’s a big one. But who – or what – is Eclipso? Spoilers for Stargirl season 1 follow.
The Justice Society of America overthrew the Injustice Society’s evil plans for half of America in what can only be described as a jaw-dropping season finale of DC Universe‘s Stargirl. However, even though Brainwave, Icicle, Dragon King, Sportsmaster and Tigress may no longer be threats, the JSA is going to have their hands full in season 2.
In one of the episode’s multiple ending teasers, we saw Cindy Burman/Shiv (Meg DeLacy) rummaging through the ISA’s storage facility to find something. What she was looking for – and ultimately found – was a kite-shaped purple talisman. Upon finding it, she gleefully revealed that she saw Eclipso in there.
It sounds like we’re going to have to deal with even more of the supernatural in Stargirl season 2. Let’s find out who Eclipso is.
Who is Eclipso in DC Comics?
Eclipso made his DC Comics debut all the way back in 1963, appearing in House of Secrets. Though he was more of a generic villain at first, he was revamped and reimagined in 1992’s Darkness Within miniseries, becoming one of the most evil and dangerous entities in all of the DC Universe.
Originally an alter-ego of Bruce Gordon, he was rewritten to be an evil vengeance demon who had actually possessed Gordon. The demon’s soul had been trapped inside a large black diamond known as the Heart of Darkness, and once that diamond was shattered, he was able to escape.
An unnerving Goblin-like creature, Eclipso is an incredibly powerful cosmic entity that is considered, by many, to be the incarnation of the original Spirit of God’s wrath. Over the years, he has wreaked a lot of havoc on the DC landscape and even possessed a number of superheroes, including Wonder Woman.
How will Eclipso play into Stargirl season 2?
The ISA may have been defeated by Stargirl and the JSA, but not all of the villains were taken off the board. Among the remaining “members” (if you will) was Dragon King’s daughter Shiv – who actually killed her father – and her decision to retrieve the Heart of Darkness diamond suggests that she’s going to allow her unhinged personality to continue making bad decisions in season 2.
It’s clear that Stargirl season 2 is looking to adopt a more supernatural tone. Not only are Cindy’s origins unclear and unnerving, but the season will also feature the return of the villainous ISA member Shade – a mysterious immortal character who can manipulate shadows that hasn’t been seen since the opening of the first season.
With all of this supernatural in play, it seems that either Shade or Eclipso could serve as season 2’s big bad. And the latter could very well play a role similar to that of Solomon Grundy in the first, as the writers undoubtedly build up to his debut.
