Call me, Stargirl

Speaking of putting on the suit, the first time that we see Courtney in her Stargirl suit is absolutely fantastic. Seeing ride in to save Pat from Brainwave, giving herself her own superhero name, and then calling Pat “her sidekick,” it’s absolutely iconic and a perfect presentation as to what Courtney aspires to be. She entirely skipped the “refusal of the call” portion of Joseph Campbell’s “Hero’s Journey” archetype and that’s wonderful to see in this moment for Courtney.

This one moment, regardless of the fight with Brainwave that occurs just moments after Courtney’s arrival, is indicative of who Courtney is in regards to the show. She comes in, hurling bright light and Brainwave, saving Pat in the process. She comes in, for the lack of a better phrase, shining like a star hoping to burn out the darkness in front of her.

She’s the exact opposite of Batman, which is not an attack on Batman. In fact, they are similar in some ways. They both fight for justice in the name of those that were killed by injustice. However, Courtney was to shine bright enough for everyone to see and that’s clear in first time out as in her suit as Stargirl.
