Supernatural star Jensen Ackles has found a new gig. He will be joining the cast of Amazon Prime’s comic book show, The Boys Season 3.
From hunter to superhero. The CW’s Supernatural star Jensen Ackles has been cast as Soldier Boy on The Boys Season 3. The comic book show, which debuted in 2019, and is set to air its second season this fall on Amazon Prime. TVLine reports that Ackles will feature in the third season which has yet to begin filming.
The Boys was renewed for a third season during this year’s SDCC@Home. Ackles is the latest actor to join the cast, recently it was revealed that X-Men alum, Shawn Ashmore, will star as Lamplighter.
What do we know about Ackles joining The Boys Season 3?
Ackles revealed the news with a teaser video on his Instagram account, before the official announcement from The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke. In his statement, Kripke, who created Supernatural, joked about wanting to ensure Ackles had a job after the end of his 15 year-long tenure as Dean Winchester. Ackles has become synonymous as one half of the Winchester brothers on the fan-favourite show. With Supernatural coming to an end this year, many wondered what Ackles’ next role would be. Now we know.
The character of Soldier Boy is described as being the ‘original superhero’. His efforts during the Second World War made him an American celebrity. The character is supposedly a mixture of humour and pathos – qualities that Ackles has imbued Dean Winchester with for years.
It’s not clear how large a role Soldier Boy will play in The Boys Season 3, or how he’ll crossover to the present timeline with Butcher and Homelander. Much like the rest of the characters on the show, Soldier Boy is a spoof of Captain America and the term is a title rather than a code name. Will Ackles play a version of a man out of time, or several different characters carrying the same moniker?
Ackles gained a huge fan following among comic book readers after voicing the role of Jason Todd/ Red Hood in Batman: Under the Red Hood. Fans have been vying for him to get a superhero role, especially after he shared images of himself cosplaying the character. Though we may never see him don the iconic red helmet in a live-action property, we will see him become a superhero. That’s if you can call any of the characters on The Boys heroes.
