Ben Affleck’s Dark Knight returns to the DCEU in the upcoming The Flash movie, but his Batman won’t be the only one in the film…

The departure of Ben Affleck rocked the DCEU to its very core. A fantastic actor that gave his all to the role of Batman, many felt he had been robbed of a great film to show fans what he could really do. However, it’s not the end for Batfleck just yet.

In a shocking turn of events, Vanity Fair has revealed that the veteran will reprise his role as the Caped Crusader in 2022’s The Flash alongside Justice League co-star Ezra Miller – who plays the titular superhero Barry Allen.

Director Andy Muschietti spoke in an interview:

"“His Batman has a dichotomy that is very strong which is his masculinity—because of the way he looks, and the imposing figure that he has, and his jawline —but he’s also very vulnerable… He knows how to deliver from the inside out, that vulnerability. He just needs a story that allows him to bring that contrast, that balance.”"

Affleck portrayed the role in 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of JusticeJustice League and also made a cameo appearance in Suicide Squad. Once upon a time it seemed he would write, direct and star in The Batman, but Matt Reeves will now make that film with Robert Pattinson playing the lead role.

A multiverse of Batman

While it seems likely that this will be an unexpected last hurrah for his Dark Knight, he won’t be the only version of the character appearing. A few weeks back it was revealed that Michael Keaton would be reprising his role from the classic 1989 film Batman and its sequel Batman Returns. Muschietti has now confirmed that both of these Caped Crusaders have a “substantial” role.

As the film is seemingly inspired by the iconic Flashpoint comic, fans have theorised that we could also see Jeffrey Dean Morgan play that version of the character, essentially reprising his role from Dawn of Justice as Thomas Wayne.

It seems that we’re about to see plenty of Batman in The Flash and it goes without saying that this film could very well be a pivotal moment for the DCEU.
