Sony’s Marvel universe has found its director for Kraven the Hunter
By Scott Brown
Sony continues to try and flesh out its Marvel universe slate and has brought on yet another director to do so.
Just a day after Deadline reported that Olivia Wilde was joining Sony’s Marvel universe, Deadline has another report revealing that J.C. Chandor is also being brought into the Sony Marvel universe. Reportedly, Chandor is being brought in by Sony to helm a Kraven the Hunter film. Chandor has previously helmed such films as A Most Violent Year and the 2019 Netflix feature Triple Frontier.
Chandor is the latest director to join Sony in bringing their Marvel universe to life as the aforementioned Wilde and S.J. Clarkson have also been tapped to direct upcoming projects. The difference for Chandor’s project is that it will focus on a villain, much like the upcoming Morbius film will do.
As of now, it’s unclear which direction that the film will go in regarding the Kraven character, but it would be interesting to see this possibly as a stepping off point for say, Black Cat, which is also in development. Given Kraven’s nature, as his name implies, as a hunter, it’s possible to see several cameos throughout the film from Sony’s Marvel properties.
Beyond Kraven and the report of Wilde’s potential Spider-Woman film, Sony has several other films in its developmental pipeline as well. S.J. Clarkson is set to direct a Madame Webb film and Marc Guggenheim, of Arrow fame, has been hired to write the script for Jackpot. Sony also reportedly have Black Cat and Silver Sable films in development in addition to its Tom Holland Spider-Man franchise, which is set to begin shooting its third installment at the end of this year.
As for their current slate though, Morbius and Venom: Let There Be Carnage are set to be released in 2021. So, while there isn’t much known about the direction that Kraven the Hunter will go in just yet, it’s very clear that Sony is putting a lot of stock in its Marvel properties.
