They don’t need Spider-Man

In an issue of New Avengers, Luke Cage asked Spider-Man what his relationship to Spider-Woman was. Spider-Man said they don’t have one. And they don’t. Sure, they’re connected by The Web of Life and Destiny, but that’s it.

Spider-Gwen doesn’t have a relationship with Spider-Man other than the times she leaves the universe and sees Peter Parker or Miles Morales. Because, on her Earth, there is no Spider-Man. With all that said, neither of these women need Spider-Man in their projects.

Would an appearance from Spider-Man help? Of course. Everyone loves him and a cameo from Tom Holland’s webslinger would probably bring in even more viewers. But he doesn’t – and shouldn’t – be a major part of their projects.

Too much Spidey would set a bad precedent. It would seem like they can’t maintain a potential show or movie without him. And throughout both of the Spider-Women’s time in Marvel Comics, they’ve done fine without them. Why should they start needing him now? Just because “spider” is in their name doesn’t mean they have to always be connected to Peter or Miles.

In the end, we have two fantastic characters with a plethora of potential – so much that this is one of the few times where they don’t need a big name villain to succeed. Spider-Gwen’s Earth is full of different versions of Spider-Man villains – on top of Frank Castle who’s a police Captain and an evil Daredevil. Jessica Drew could be a detective and solve superpower crimes and be loved for that very reason.

Whatever happens, we can rest assured that Olivia Wilde will do everything she can to make this potential Spider-Woman project a success.
