Robert Pattinson is the new hero in The Batman, but he and Christopher Nolan recently worked together on Tenet. What does The Dark Knight director think of Pattinson’s portrayal?

Robert Pattinson had us all talking when he took center stage in the very first trailer for The Batman – which dropped during DC FanDome last month. A new take on Gotham’s gritty crime-fighter, the trailer for the Matt Reeves film was the first video footage of the new Caped Crusader and fans responded with a lot of love.

But what does director Christopher Nolan think of Pattinson’s take on the hero? Nolan, one of Hollywood’s most revered directors, is best known among comic book fans for directing the critically-acclaimed Dark Knight trilogy (Batman BeginsThe Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises) and he recently collaborated with Pattinson on Tenet.

Speaking to CNA (H/T: Digital Spy), Nolan revealed that they rarely discussed his iconic role during their time together, adding that they “kept a respectful silence” around it until near the end of the shoot. He commented:

"“He certainly did not ask me for any advice… We said a couple of things and made a couple of jokes. We did have a little bit of a conversation about the various aspects of what he was going to be putting himself through.”"

It’s clear that the director has faith in the future Batman and is excited to see what he does with the legendary role.

"“But I was thrilled that he was cast. I think that he’ll do an amazing job and I’m really excited to see what he does with that character."

Pattinson himself recently revealed that the secrecy surrounding his audition meant that he had to lie to the director during their shoot. Nolan, however, saw right through it and understood how secretive everything was supposed to be.

When the film hits theaters, Pattinson will join the likes of Adam West, Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney, Christian Bale and Ben Affleck to play the iconic DC Comics hero on the big screen. Meanwhile, both Keaton and Affleck will be reprising their roles from their respective franchises in 2022’s DCEU film The Flash.
