Robert Downey Jr. portrayed Iron Man for over a decade in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and now he has spoken about when (or if) we can expect him to return to the MCU.

Robert Downey Jr. entertained millions of people as Tony Stark/Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. When he kicked the whole MCU off in 2008, nobody could have expected the legacy that he and Marvel Studios would create together.

The character’s story concluded in the game-changing Avengers: Endgame as Tony, Captain America, Thor and the rest of the Avengers battled Thanos in a history-making battle that closed an iconic era for the MCU.

With many original cast members departing, fans have wondered if we’ll ever see them reprise their roles in future MCU movies, and now Robert Downey Jr. has shed some light on whether he’d ever return.

Speaking to Jason Bateman, Will Anett and Sean Hayes on the SmartLess podcast (H.T: DigitalSpy), the MCU veteran spoke a little about his future, reiterating comments he previously made when asked about a return, commenting:

"“That’s all done… As far as I’m concerned, I hung up my guns and I’m good to let it go.”"

He also revealed that he’s excited to see where the MCU goes next, noting how experimental Phase 4 is shaping up to be. He added:

"“I also think that Marvel is on this journey now, they’re trying a bunch of other stuff and you know, I’m excited for them to see how all that goes.”"

The veteran actor first portrayed the role in 2008’s Iron Man before going on to reprise it in Iron Man 2The AvengersIron Man 3Avengers: Age of UltronCaptain America: Civil WarSpider-Man: HomecomingAvengers: Infinity War and, finally, Avengers: Endgame. There have been an abundance of rumors suggesting that he will make a cameo in Black Widow (which was due to be released in May and has since been delayed until October) but those are unconfirmed.
