Remembering Chadwick Boseman’s best Marvel moments
T’Challa makes peace with Steve
After everything that happened with the Avengers, Steve ends up on Wakanda to see Bucky be put on ice until they can work out how to reverse his brainwashing. He then chats with T’Challa, thanking him for helping his best friend. The soon-to-be king tells him that Barnes and T’Chaka were both victims and he wants to help at least one of them and that it is the least he can do.
Chadwick’s performance in this mid-credit scene shows how far T’Challa has come since the death of his father. We see him go from wanting to kill Bucky with his own claws to wanting to protect an innocent man. There is an air to Boseman’s actions in this scene that conveys so many different things, despite it being just a simple ‘standing around and talking’ sequence.
It conveys an apology without having to say, “I’m sorry”, a promise to keep an innocent man safe, and to be the bigger person. Chadwick’s performance illustrates all these things as well as his ability to show the compassion within the character’s heart despite the complicated situation.
T’Challa gets tongue-tied around Nakia
One of the best Marvel moments Chadwick Boseman gave us was T’Challa’s meeting with former girlfriend, Nakia in Nigeria – despite being told by the leader of the Dora Milaje and his close friend Okoye not to freeze when he sees her.
He smugly responds that he never does, but the second he sees his ex, he tenses up and it results in Nakia telling him off for almost getting the people she was protecting killed.
There are a load of moments early in Black Panther like this one – which is great fun to see. The reason for this is the chemistry between Boseman and Lupita Nyong’o. This allows us to see how adaptable Chadwick’s acting abilities were in the scenes they shared.
