T’Challa and Okoye mock Ross in Xhosa

One of the funniest moments in Black Panther is the exchange between T’Challa and Okoye when Klaue and taken into custody by Ross. When the CIA agent suggests interviewing the murderer with the Good Cop, Bad Cop, approach, the king and bodyguard exchange words in their native language.

Okoye tells T’Challa they can’t allow Ross to speak with Klaue by himself. The king suggests they allow Everett have five minutes with the terrorist so he doesn’t throw a tantrum. In English he says that once the criminal has been interviewed they are going to take him back to Wakanda.

Ross is insistent that Klaue has to go back to the US as he was the one to arrest him. He even says that while he likes the king, he’s doing him a favor by letting him and Okoye be in the viewing room. Everett touches T’Challa which irks Okoye who threatens to impale the CIA agent to the desk if he does it again. This then results to him asking if the bodyguard speaks English and she responds, “When she wants to.” Once he’s out of the room, the monarch tells his friend to play nic – which she rebuffs.

Boseman in this scene is incredible as he speaks another language effortlessly and also keeps a straight face while mocking someone with a similar agenda to T’Challa. In the same moment, he is also playing mediator having push to Okoye to play nice with Ross.
